Discover the rich history of Buffalo Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, Illini State Park, and Starved Rock State Park (Illinois’ most visited state park). Explore the fascinating past of the Illinois Valley, from the Indigenous communities who first called this land home to the French explorers who navigated the Illinois River. Learn how the parks were transformed during the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) era, when the CCC also contributed to projects along the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Hear the stories behind the cliffs, trails, and waterways that have become cherished landmarks and state treasures for generations. This class is taught by Amada Carter, a collaborative instructor from Illinois Valley Community College.
