This class explores the years 1524–1763, when the French first explored and then settled in North America, including the regions now known as Illinois (Il-len-nohwa) and Wisconsin (Wis-kon-sa). It examines French relations with Native Americans and the outcomes of their conflicts with the British. Key French sites such as Fort de Chartres (IL), Portage (WI), and others will be reviewed. Participants will learn three facts about Illinois during its time under French control, as well as what French cultural and historical influences remain in Illinois and Wisconsin today. This class is taught by Mark Pete, a collaborative instructor from Rock Valley College.
