« back to classes page
This class is designed for beginner and intermediate birders looking to improve their bird identification skills and deepen their understanding of the many species found in the area. Jeff Aufmann of McHenry County Audubon, an experienced bird guide and expert in identifying local birds by sight and sound, will lead the class. The course will begin with an indoor session covering key traits and behaviors that aid in identification, along with a review of the major bird groups found locally. We'll also discuss the latest internet and smartphone tools for locating, identifying, and tracking bird species. There will also be a bird walk at nearby McHenry Dam, where participants will practice using binoculars and spotting scopes. We'll apply new skills in the field to locate and identify as many bird species as possible.
