Growing up in Hebron, Illinois—before the town was known for its basketball talent—it seemed unlikely that the last time two brothers would see each other would be thousands of miles from home, in the far reaches of the Pacific. Assigned to different battleships during WWII, they met by pure chance. Years later, one returned home, while the other became McHenry County’s only Medal of Honor recipient.
