Elders of Native American tribes looked across the Great Plains and imagined spirits of horses, giraffes, and elephants that no longer exist in our world. Nearly 1,000 miles away, a supervolcano erupted, blanketing vast regions of North America in ash and leaving devastation in its wake some 12 million years ago. By remarkable chance, Ice Age glaciers later spared one small area, preserving the ashfall and the extraordinary story it contained: giraffe-like camels, barrel-bodied rhinos, raccoon-dogs, saber-toothed deer, and five different species of horses. Join us as we explore life and death in the shadow of the supervolcano we know today as Yellowstone.
