Take flight in this high-energy course where students explore the science of aviation through multiple hands-on educational activities.
Chuck Glider Build & Fly Students will be introduced to the four forces of flight and put their knowledge into action by building their very own foam board Chuck Glider. After construction, they’ll head to the gym to test, fly, and fine-tune their gliders for maximum performance. Creativity is encouraged—materials will be provided so students can customize and decorate their aircraft. Students will be able to take their glider home at the end of class.
Drone Build & Fly Safety comes first! Students will learn the rules and regulations of drone flight before assembling and flying a Discovery Drone. Through a series of fun missions, they’ll practice precision landings, aircraft orientation awareness, and a delivery challenge transporting a “payload” to its destination. By the end of the session, students will understand the basics of safe and confident drone piloting and what to consider when purchasing a drone. Note: Drones used in class remain property of the program and are not taken home.
RC Ground School This session dives into the inner workings of RC airplanes. Students will explore radio systems and aircraft types; key electronics (receivers, servos, speed controls, and LiPo batteries); and rules and regulations for RC flight. Hands-on practice includes flying on simulators and using 3-axis gyro systems to experience the feel of RC controls. Upon completion, students are eligible to join the AMA Introductory Pilot Program (IPP) with the COL Eagles in Hebron, IL. This program offers 90 days of free participation and insurance coverage through the Academy of Model Aeronautics, with access to club aircraft and equipment at no cost.
For anyone curious about how to get started in RC aviation, this class is the perfect launchpad! ??
