Mary Hegeler Carus, the eldest daughter of zinc tycoon Edward C. Hegeler, was the first woman to graduate from the University of Michigan with an engineering degree, and the first woman to serve as president of two global companies--Open Court Publishing (known for Cricket Magazine) and the Matthiessen-Hegeler Zinc Company--all before women were granted the right to vote! Not only was she a successful businesswoman, Mary was also a mother, a student, and a community leader living in La Salle, Illinois until her passing in 1936. In this class, you'll discover how Mary became a dynamic, inspiring woman ahead of her time. This class is taught by the Hegeler Carus Mansion Staff, a collaborative instructor from Illinois Valley Community College.
